Secure Document Expert Frank Abagnale Educates Consumers On Identity Theft
Leading identity theft expert partners with uni-ball® 207™ pens to launch 2006 Public Service Campaign
(Oak Brook, Ill – July 10, 2006) – Frank Abagnale, expert consultant on forgery and subject of the book and blockbuster movie "Catch Me If You Can," is launching a public service campaign to raise awareness about the growing problem of identity theft.
The television and radio PSA feature Abagnale, who delivers a message about methods that people can take to help protect themselves from becoming an identity theft victim.
"People need to be aware of the problem so they can take action to prevent themselves from becoming victims,"Some of the steps presented in the PSA include shredding important documents before tossing them in the garbage, eliminating pre-approved credit card mailings by having your name removed from mailing lists and even the pen you use makes a difference."
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), identity theft is the fastest growing nonviolent crime in the United States with a startling 255,565 complaints logged in 2005 alone.
"These increasingly alarming statistics motivate us to educate the public about how they can protect themselves," said Doug Kruep, senior brand manager, uni-ball. "The PSA urges people to be on high alert and offers steps they can take to protect themselves from falling prey."
Among the most traditional and common forms of identity theft is check washing. Check washing is a process in which checks are stolen from the mail or by other means and the ink is erased, using common household products. The thief can then rewrite the check payable to himself or herself, in the amount of their choosing.
Many uni-ball pens, such as the uni-ball 207 gel pen, use specially formulated inks that contain color pigments. The color pigments in the ink are absorbed into the paper fibers. When an individual tries to wash the information written on the check or another important document, the ink is in effect "trapped."
The PSA is part of the ̴Secure Your Signature" campaign from uni-ball, educating individuals nationwide about identity theft.
